11th September - Day of Action
CROWDS SUPPORT THE FIGHT FOR JOBS & JUSTICE AT DAY
OF ACTION 11TH SEPTEMBER 2009
Members of GMB and UNISON employed by
National Grid at Newcastle strike on Friday 11th
September with 95% vote for action over the company’s plans to
offshore and outsource their work to a low wage
economy
National Grid is threatening to close the
Newcastle Office and offshore the work to a low wage economy such
as India. 189 workers in Newcastle face the sack.
This year National Grid posted profits of
nearly £3bn pounds and paid shareholders a dividend of 23p per
share. Shareholders have also been guaranteed an 8% return per year
until 2012.
Seven National Grid directors have enjoyed a
total of £9.47 million in salary and bonuses this year.
As consumers have seen their energy bills soar
and National Grid find the money for a senior executive to park his
Ferrari in a dehumidified garage known as the “Hotel for Fine
Automobiles”, Newcastle workers face a future on the
dole.
